Last week, the Telegram ban was in the news due to some allegations, and now it’s the turn of another popular social media platform, Twitter. Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Brazilian Supreme Court has suspended Elon Musk’s Twitter nationwide.
Twitter is a free social networking platform where users upload text, videos, photos, and links. In addition, it also acts as a microblogging site for registered users. Brazil alone accounts for around 21.48 million users of this app, which has been debarred from using it in the country.
However, Brazil has banned this due to the non-compliance of Twitter’s owner with the legal orders.
Why was Twitter banned in Brazil?
The issue is in the news from last April when authorities asked Elon Musk to block some accounts on Twitter that are defaming the Constitution and violating the laws by spreading fake news and hate speech.
For this government was continuously warning the billionaire Musk. But in turn, he refused to do so.
After lots of warnings, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes finally alerted Elon Musk that X could be blocked in Brazil if he did not name a legal representative in the country. But the issue escalated when Elon Musk was unsuccessful in naming a legal representative in Brazil. Even though the court had imposed a deadline on. But noncompliance with the order triggers the ban.
The government will Henceforth be strict over Twitter users
Alexander De Moraes has ordered the telecommunication authority to block access to the X across the nation. The process of closing down Twitter will take some time. Furthermore, the satellite internet company Musk has been frozen to recover the fines of 18.5 million reais ($3.28 million) due to violation or non-compliance.
Moreover, the government has instructed Apple iOS and Alphabet Google to remove this social platform from their app stores. They are also ordered to use anti-VPN obstacles to control the situation.
However, if anyone is caught using Twitter with a VPN, will be fined $9000 per day. This imposition has entered history by being the first such restriction on the Internet.
Elon Musk’s Criticism towards Moraes
Musk criticized de Moraes on X for his acts, naming him a “dictator.” Last week, when France arrested Telegram founder Pavel Durov at Le Bourget airport, Elon Musk criticized this action too. He has presented himself as an advocate for free expression, alleging censorship by the Brazilian judiciary.
Nevertheless, his disregard for Brazilian law has caused a larger discussion about social media companies’ obligations and the degree to which they ought to be governed by national laws.
