Record-Breaking AQI 2024: Pakistan and Certain Areas of India Becoming Unsafe to Breathe

The South Asian Region of the Globe notices a thick layer of smog contributing to increasing pollution. The Punjab province of Pakistan, especially Lahore and Multan, and some parts of India like Delhi, Ghaziabad, Chandigarh, and many others, are the most affected by this increasing pollution.

This worsening air quality index (AQI) has affected 1.8 million people, including kids and pregnant women, in Pakistan’s Punjab province due to many respiratory and eye-burning issues. This is why the government has closed the schools in the area. Along with this, the government has also prohibited entry to zoos, parks, and museums to keep the citizens safe from the hazardous environment.

The cultural capital of Pakistan has even recorded an air quality index of over 1,100. It was the worst air quality ever recorded in the city, according to IQAir, and over six times higher than the level classified as “hazardous” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In this upcoming blog, let’s discuss what causes this increasing pollution and how to stay safe from it.

What are the major causes behind the increasing pollution?

The escalating pollution in Pakistan and India is due to the combination of various factors. Rapid industrialization, outdated technologies, and ineffective environmental regulations contribute to air and water pollution. The burgeoning population and increasing vehicular traffic further increase the problem.

Additionally, agricultural practices like crop residue burning and excessive use of chemicals degrade the environment. Addressing this crisis necessitates stringent regulations, technological advancements, and public awareness to improve the poor air quality in the surroundings.

Impact of Poor Air Quality on Public Health

Air pollution affects nearly all the organs of the body. Air pollutants enter the bloodstream through the lungs and travel throughout the body because of their small size. Stroke, ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, pneumonia, and cataracts are the specific illness outcomes most closely associated with exposure to poor air quality.

However, the rising pollution is causing breathing issues and eye infections, which might, in some cases, be cognitive impairment. Children and pregnant women are highly prone to such diseases due to their low immunity.

Govt. Steps to Combat the Worsening Situation Due to Rising Air Quality Index

Pakistan’s Punjab Province has implemented strict measures to combat the hazardous effects of increasing smog in the area. First of all, entry to parks, zoos, museums, playgrounds, and any other such areas is completely stopped for the coming 10 days.

In addition to this, the administration announced that due to the extremely dirty air in the federal capital, children, the elderly, and people with asthma must wear masks when they are outside.

Concluding Thought!

Don’t go outside, as the area is fully engulfed with smog and a bad air quality index, causing severe illness due to inhalation of polluted air. In case of emergency, use masks to step outside. Follow the guidelines of the government and stay safe and healthy!
